I remember looking at masks as a kid. They were so cool, and I would fixate on one—I needed to have it. So, I saved and saved, and was finally able to bring that mask home. I put it on, raced to the mirror, and looked at the monster I had just become. It was great, but then the cool-factor started to fade.  I realized my new mask was just a head cover—a really cool head cover, but a head cover nonetheless. The monster stopped at my neck. So, from the neck down, I was still Russ.

What was I going to do now? I was part werewolf, and wanted to be all werewolf.  I remember looking in the mirror and wishing that the mask went just a little bit further—maybe to the chest, or even the shoulders.  Stopping at the neck seemed…wrong!

Most masks are like that. The monster is only a head, and who wants that? What about the rest? What about illusion?

When I start sculpting a creature, I remember looking in that mirror when I was a kid. I think to myself, if I am going to create this monster, werewolf, lion, creature, what have you, I am going to make damn sure the person looking at themselves in their mirror, has more than just a head cover.  I want my creature masks to be more like costumes—to get the customer as close to achieving the look of that creature as possible with as little need for outside materials possible.  I want them to have more options, accessories, and more for their money.  So I do that. I make masks that are more like costumes, because it helps bring that illusion out.
